Coronavirus and Gum Disease

Researching the link between Coronavirus and gum disease shows how integral our oral health is with our overall health.

Many health issues are connected and present symptoms as indicators of other complications in surprising ways, such as Coronavirus and gum disease.

So, why are people with gum disease nine times more likely to die from Coronavirus? And, nearly five times more likely to need assisted ventilation?

According to the Oral Health Foundation and Dr. Nigel Carter OBE, the key is that the mouth is an early signal of other health problems. Blood in the gums is like a red flag to general health.

“This is the latest of many studies that form a connection between the mouth and other health conditions. The evidence here seems overwhelming – by maintaining good oral health, specifically healthy gums – you can limit your chances of developing the most serious complications of coronavirus," adds Dr. Carter. “When gum disease becomes advanced, treatment becomes more difficult.  Given the new link with coronavirus complications, the need for early intervention becomes even greater."

It makes sense when you think about it. The mouth and it's the crucial microbiome is the first port of call for our consumption and digestion. It seems the accurate amendment of that old adage "you are what you eat" is "you are what and how you digest."

We should never ignore the signals our body displays, like bleeding gums, yet that is precisely what many of us do.

"The Oral Health Foundation is keen to highlight the importance of taking early action against the signs of gum disease, following research that suggests far too many people ignore it. Latest figures collected by the charity show almost one-in-five Brits (19%) immediately stop brushing the bleeding area and nearly one in ten (8%) stop brushing altogether."

Gum disease is easily treatable if it's caught early. Don't ignore the signs. You owe it to your body to give yourself the best possible chance of overcoming any illness.
